It has many names, but around upstate New York and Vermont the night before Halloween was called Cabbage Night. A night during which young people play pranks and do mischief in their neighborhoods. From what I've been told, it's most popular in pockets where Irish and Scottish immigration was common — which means, as most of these immigrants would be found in the Northeast, that this night was far more common here than it would be in the South or Midwest.
